Advanced Cosmetologist Program Overview

Our cosmetology program is designed to provide you with the theoretical knowledge and practical skills you’ll need for a career in beauty today. With Raphael’s School of Beauty Culture, you get the best of both worlds: deep experience in the art and science of teaching beauty from our over 55 years in the business, and modern, up-to-date curriculum and facilities that we maintain to stay on the cutting edge of what beauty practitioners need to be successful.

As a cosmetology student at Raphael’s, you can expect to learn the technical skills for a wide variety of hair, skincare, and nail services. The program is “advanced” because it equips you with advanced topics in salon management, but there is no requirement to have any previous cosmetology training to start this program. Over the course of 1,800 hours, our comprehensive curriculum covers topics such as:

  • Cutting and styling hair
  • Hair color and highlights
  • Perms and texturizing hair
  • Facials
  • Relaxation massage
  • Waxing
  • Basic makeup application
  • Manicures and pedicures
  • Acrylics
  • Chemistry, anatomy, bacteriology, and physiology
  • Working with and hiring employees
  • Understanding payroll and other business skills
  • Client relationship management

We strive to help successful graduates of this program prepare to sit for the Ohio State Cosmetology and Barber Board licensing exam to become a Licensed Advanced Cosmetologist.

In addition to the technical skills and knowledge to pass the state boards, however, our Cosmetology programs are also designed to pass on knowledge you’ll need to operate successfully in a salon environment. Our goal is that you will feel comfortable moving into any salon setting after gaining hands-on, real-world experience in our student salon. We even help prepare you for self-employment so you can be your own boss!

Our Salon Brands

As a Raphael’s student, you’ll have the chance to work with many top salon-quality product lines, including Paul Mitchell, Big Sexy Hair, and Pravana. Our philosophy is to expose you to a wide range of products, so that you are prepared to use different brands throughout your future career.

Possible Careers in Cosmetology

There are many ways you can put cosmetology training to use in a beauty career, either as a practitioner working with clients or using your knowledge of beauty trends and techniques. You can also choose to specialize in one of the beauty disciplines within the umbrella of cosmetology (such as makeup artistry) or leverage your knowledge of a broad set of skills.

Here are just some examples of job titles you might have with a cosmetology background:

  • Hairstylist
  • Makeup Artist
  • Salon Owner
  • Beauty Product Brand Marketer
  • Beauty Influencer
  • Freelance Beauty Professional
  • And more!

Cosmetology grads also can enjoy unparalleled schedule flexibility in many of the jobs they choose. From working part-time to full-time, or from salon life to entrepreneurship, the options can be endless!

Become Dual-Licensed in Barbering

If you want to provide all types of hair services to all clients, you may want to get barbering training as well. Students who have already completed cosmetology training (from any approved program in Ohio) can get trained quickly to get their 1,000 additional hours for a barber license. Our cosmetology-to-barber dual license program allows you to become a barber in 44% less time than if you start from scratch.

Cosmetology Kit

Our Student Kits

A moment that many students love is receiving their cosmetology student kit. Not only is it fun to unbox a lot of goodies, but the student kit also represents receiving your tools of the trade. Our cosmetology students receive a curated starter set of tools and supplies (including shears, brushes and combs, a hairdryer, curling irons, hair clips, mannequin heads, and much more) that will be indispensable during the program, as well as books, an apron, and Raphael’s nametag.

Your kit expands as your skillset does! When our Cosmetology students reach 300 hours of attendance, they receive an iPad to help with their learning, as well as access codes to Pivot Point, our curriculum provider. After 600 hours of attendance in our program, you’ll receive a Glo-Minerals mineral makeup kit.
